I was the last "new" member to join Freelantz. Joining Freelantz started me playing in the local rock clubs in Vegas. We mostly played at Captian Americas back then.

When I was in my first band, Flytex, there was a battle of the bands at Earthquake Magoo's on the Boulder Highway. My fellow band members and I went to the battle to check out the other bands. It was suggested we enter the battle. After watching the bands Freelantz & Barrel Dutch kicking bloody ass onstage my comment was "No way, we don't stand a chance up against bands like that." We did not enter the contest.
After Flytex run it's course I hooked up with Jaymi Names and played with him for the next three years. Jaymi was into progressive music and the more complex and harder it was to play, the better. Playing with Jaymi improved my chops considerably.
Around 1982 after not playing with a band for six months or more I ran into Jaymi in Ted Vesely's Music Store. Jaymi told me that Freelantz was looking for a bass player. I flashed back on that battle of the bands when I was still a rank beginner and they were one of the best bands around at the time, and I thought, "I'm not good enough to play with those guys." I hemed and hawed and told Jaymi that I haden't played in six months and bla bla bla. Jaymi said "Hey, your a fool if you don't at least try." I took the phone number.
When I went over for the first audition I learned two original songs on the spot. They gave me a tape and told me to learn what I could and come back in three days. Upon returning they asked "How many songs did you learn?" "All of them" I said. They raised their eyebrows as if to say: we shall see. We ran through every tune they had and it was like I had always been there. Two weeks later, after cramming thirty more tunes in my head, I was playing in a club, Captain America's, for the first time in my life and scared to death. I have played with the drummer, Mike Donsi, now for over 20 years in many bands and clubs. The years I played with Jaymi Names and his hard to play progressive music made what Freelantz was doing easy in comparison.

"THANK YOU JAYMI FOR KICKING ME IN THE ASS!" bs
